A grid convergence study is performed to establish benchmark solutions for turbulent flows in three dimensions (3D) in support of turbulence-model verification campaign at the Turbulence Modeling Resource (TMR) website. The three benchmark cases are subsonic flows around a 3D bump and a hemisphere-cylinder configuration and a supersonic internal flow through a square duct. Reference solutions are computed for Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model using a linear eddy-viscosity model for the external flows and a nonlinear eddy-viscosity model based on a quadratic constitutive relation for the internal flow. The study involves three widely-used practical computational fluid dynamics codes developed and supported at NASA Langley Research Center: FUN3D, USM3D, and CFL3D. Reference steady-state solutions computed with these three codes on families of consistently refined grids are presented. Grid-to-grid and code-to-code variations are described in detail.

A detailed grid convergence study has been conducted to establish accurate reference solutions corresponding to the one-equation linear eddy-viscosity Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model for two dimensional turbulent flows around the NACA 0012 airfoil and a flat plate. The study involved three widely used codes, CFL3D (NASA), FUN3D (NASA), and TAU (DLR), and families of uniformly refined structured grids that differ in the grid density patterns. Solutions computed by different codes on different grid families appear to converge to the same continuous limit, but exhibit different convergence characteristics. The grid resolution in the vicinity of geometric singularities, such as a sharp trailing edge, is found to be the major factor affecting accuracy and convergence of discrete solutions, more prominent than differences in discretization schemes and/or grid elements. The results reported for these relatively simple turbulent flows demonstrate that CFL3D, FUN3D, and TAU solutions are very accurate on the finest grids used in the study, but even those grids are not sufficient to conclusively establish an asymptotic convergence order.

Several improvements to the mixed-element USM3D discretization and defect-correction schemes have been made. A new methodology for nonlinear iterations, called the Hierarchical Adaptive Nonlinear Iteration Scheme (HANIS), has been developed and implemented. It provides two additional hierarchies around a simple and approximate preconditioner of USM3D. The hierarchies are a matrix-free linear solver for the exact linearization of Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations and a nonlinear control of the solution update. Two variants of the new methodology are assessed on four benchmark cases, namely, a zero-pressure gradient flat plate, a bump-in-channel configuration, the NACA 0012 airfoil, and a NASA Common Research Model configuration. The new methodology provides a convergence acceleration factor of 1.4 to 13 over the baseline solver technology.

XXXX This manual is intended to guide an application engineer through con gura- tion, compiling, installing, and executing the Fun3D simulation package. The focus is on the most commonly exercised capabilities. Therefore, some of the immature or rarely exercised capabilities are intentionally omitted in the in- terest of clarity. An accompanying document that provides example cases is under development. Release of the generic gas capability is restricted because of International Trac in Arms Regulations (ITAR), so Fun3D usually distributed with the generic gas capability disabled. See section 1.4 for details. This manual de- scribes Fun3D with and without the generic gas capability, denoted eqn type= 'generic'. Features that are speci c to an eqn type are explicitly indicated. This document is updated and released with each subsequent version of Fun3D. In fact, a signi cant portion is automatically extracted from the Fun3D source code. If you have diculties, nd any errors.

With continued advancements in the laboratory processing of samples for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), sequence data are generated at a faster rate resulting in bottlenecks of mtDNA sequence analysis. The research goal of this project was to reduce the review time of mtDNA sequence data by using advanced expert system tools, while also decreasing subjectivity and error in haplotype reporting. The development of expert system tools for the analysis of mtDNA can greatly enhances throughput capabilities, reduces error, and significantly impacts the amount of time required for data review by the analyst. The UNT Health Science Center (UNTHSC) has identified several steps in the analysis of mtDNA that can significantly reduce labor in data review; thus, reducing the overall analytical time. A reduction in labor and processing time will improve efficiency and increase the overall capacity of mtDNA processing by the laboratory. The focus for the improvements addressed in this project included software development for two new programs (eFAST Software v2.0, UNTHSC, Ft. Worth, TX, and STATIS, UNTHSC) and enhancements to an existing advanced software data analysis package (MTexpert, MitoTech, LLC, Santa Fe, NM). eFAST Software (eFAST) and STATIS Software for mtDNA data review and management were designed and programmed by UNTHSC personnel. MTexpert, an expert system for mtDNA data analysis, was enhanced by the software vendor under contract to UNTHSC based on evaluations and improvements recommended by the highly experienced forensic DNA analysts at UNTHSC.

The effects of mesh irregularities on accuracy of unstructured node-centered finite-volume discretizations are considered. The focus is on an edge-based approach that uses unweighted least-squares gradient reconstruction with a quadratic fit. For inviscid fluxes, the discretization is nominally third order accurate on general triangular meshes. For viscous fluxes, the scheme is an average-least-squares formulation that is nominally second order accurate and contrasted with a common Green-Gauss discretization scheme. Gradient errors, truncation errors, and discretization errors are separately studied according to a previously introduced comprehensive methodology. The methodology considers three classes of grids: isotropic grids in a rectangular geometry, anisotropic grids typical of adapted grids, and anisotropic grids over a curved surface typical of advancing layer grids. The meshes within the classes range from regular to extremely irregular including meshes with random perturbation of nodes. Recommendations are made concerning the discretization schemes that are expected to be least sensitive to mesh irregularities in applications to turbulent flows in complex geometries.
